Deanston Distillery

Deanston Distillery
Deanston Visitors Centre

Deanston Distillery - Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan, has been nurturing Deanston Single Malts since 1991.

The Distillery is near the beautiful Perthshire village of Doune overlooking Doune Castle and the River Teith and round the corner from Cromlix House and is very well worth making the visit. The visitors centre is warm and welcoming and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and if that is not enough you can enjoy a very good cup of coffee in the Cafe before or after a tour.

Their story begins in 1785 with the opening of the Deanston Cotton Mill - the very building that would one day become home to their fine single malt. The mill, which manufactured cotton sheets and curtain lace, became a valued source of employment in the area, with many highlanders making Deanston their home after being forced to leave their homes in the infamous clearances.

By the 1920's the industry was sadly in decline and Deanston Mill closed its doors for the last time on April 2 1965. However, rather than signalling the end of an era, it heralded a new beginning for the community and when it formally opened as a distillery in January 1967 a new craft was born. The mill’s location on the banks of the River Teith make it the ideal home for a distillery and the constant cool temperature in the weaving shed is perfect for maturation. There are a number of different levels of tours that you can take to discover the intracacies of distilling one of Scotlands malts.

The Deanston Classic Tour lets you see how they evolved from an 18th century cotton mill to a whisky distillery producing the distinctive Single Malt Whisky which is sweet and fruity with a malty honeyed spiciness on the palate. Enjoy the guided tour and a dram of their Deanston 12yo Highland Single Malt and a dram of Deanston Virgin Oak.

The Deanston Tasting Room Tour where you enjoy the distillery tour and in addition end in the Deanston Tasting Room. Exploring the aromas and flavours of our Deanston expressions, you are invited to discover how their handcrafted approach contributes to the exceptional Deanston expressions with a taste of 3 different drams.

The Deanston Heritage Tour extends the Tasting Room Tour with a chance to go back in time to the 18th century and soak up some of Deanston’s rich heritage. Experience the social history of the community whilst strolling through the historic ‘workers’ village on the banks of the beautiful River Teith and visit the distillery’s water source.

Now if you are a whisky lover with a sweet tooth then this one is for you - The Deanston Whisky and Chocolate Tour. These unique whisky and chocolate tours perfectly pair the favourite Deanston drams with beautiful chocolate produced by Highland Chocolatier, Iain Burnett. Guided tour of the distillery with either 3 or 4 whisky tastings and 3 or 4 chocolates, (includes 1 or 2 distillery exclusives).
