The Braveheart Tour

A one day tour travelling to The Bannockburn Heritage Centre, the scene of the great victory by King Robert the Bruce in June 1314 where he defeated the forces of King Edward II to win freedom for the Scots. Travel on towards Stirling, the Gateway to the Highlands, and stop to tour the famous Stirling Castle which overlooks the River Forth where William Wallace defeated the army of Edward I. Visit the Church of the Holy Rude, the second oldest building in Stirling after the castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned Queen while still a small baby and where her son was crowned King of Scotland. Soak up the history and stunning views from the Wallace Monument, a 220 foot high tower perched high on the Abbey Craig around where Wallace camped before his heroic battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, built in 1869 to commemorate William "Braveheart" Wallace.

Travelling north past Doune Castle and Callander and heading west into The Trossachs, the heart of Rob Roy country through Achray Forest and Aberfoyle towards the Lake of Menteith, the only lake in Scotland and home to Inchmahome Priory, a refuge for a 4 year old Mary Queen of Scots, in 1547. Leaving Rob Roy country travelling south past the Queen Elizabeth Forest to the most magnificent views over the whole of Loch Lomond and its islands which can be seen from Ross Priory. This favoured location is associated with the great Scottish novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott where he harvested much of the material for his long narrative poem "The Lady of the Lake", (Loch Katrine), and wrote a large part of his novel "Rob Roy" while staying here. A visit to the Glengoyne Whisky Distillery in Drumgoyne, where you will be offered a dram of Glengoyne 10 year old Single Highland Malt whisky, view a short video presentation and taken on an informative guided distillery tour, can be arranged on the return home time permitting.

This is only a guide as any other historical sites can be incorporated into a tailored sightseeing tour of your own making. You can lengthen or shorten the duration of your tour and select your own accommodation.
