A one day tour inspired by William Wallace. Travel to Stirling, the Gateway to the Highlands and make a brief stop at the Church of the Holy Rude, the second oldest building in Stirling after the castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned Queen while still a small baby and where her son was crowned King of Scotland, then round the corner to Stirling Castle which overlooks the River Forth where William Wallace defeated the army of Edward I.
Travel the short distance to the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge, when on September 11, 1297 the forces of Andrew de Moray and William Wallace clashed with those of John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey, and the English forces suffered defeat. Soak up the history and stunning views from the Wallace Monument, a 220 foot high tower perched high on the Abbey Craig around where Wallace camped before his heroic battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, built in 1869 to commemorate William "Braveheart" Wallace. |
